To mark Earth Day 2025, the news brand supports the charity and publishes a series of editorial pieces about water pollution in the UK. The news brand is donating £20,000 of ad inventory to Surfers Against Sewage to support its vital work
This is the second year running that the news brand has supported the organisation.
Surfers Against Sewage was created in 1990 by a group of Cornish surfers, fighting to clean up the water that was making them unwell. Today, Surfers Against Sewage campaigns on all that threatens the sea, from sewage to plastic, mobilising communities of ocean activists to take on the polluters.
Chloe Hubbard, UK editor at The Independent, comments: “At The Independent, we’re committed to coming together to change our world for the better.
“This Earth Day, we are revealing the shocking state of our water at some of the UK’s most popular beaches and calling for urgent action. We’re also once again supporting the vital work of Surfers Against Sewage.”
Giles Bristow, chief executive of Surfers Against Sewage, says: “Over the past few years, campaigners across the UK have been tireless in calling out the polluters, with the issue now regularly making headline news, forcing water companies and the government to sit up and listen to our demands.
“With the Independent Water Commission soon set to deliver recommendations on the future of the privatised water industry, this is a pivotal moment in the fight for clean waters. With the generous support of The Independent, and the relentless campaigning from ocean activists across the UK, we’re hopeful that this year can mark the beginning of the end of sewage pollution.”
