At the first ceremony dedicated entirely to news podcast journalism, news brands had a strong showing at yesterday’s inaugural News Podcast Awards in central London
Hosted by the Society of Editors and presented by Sky News’ Kamali Melbourne, more than 150 journalists, producers, and editors celebrated the reporting, creativity, and impact driving one of the fastest-growing formats in media today.
The Guardian won True Crime Podcast of the Year for ‘Missing in the Amazon’, an investigation into the 2022 disappearances and murders of British journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian indigenous expert Bruno Pereira. The Daily Mail took Investigative Podcast of the Year for ‘Pipeline: Left to Die’, which exposed the shocking deaths of four professional divers sucked into an oil pipeline off the Caribbean island of Trinidad.
The Times and The Sunday Times picked up Royal Podcast of the Year for ‘The Royals’, while also achieving highly commended for ‘The Story’ in the News Summary category and ‘The Poppy Day Bomb’ in the True Crime category.
At the awards Dawn Alford, chief executive of the Society of Editors, said: “It is a pleasure to bring together so many of the people behind one of the most dynamic, and fast-evolving areas of modern journalism.
“In a remarkably short space of time, news podcasts have moved from the margins to the mainstream, becoming an essential part of how audiences engage with news, analysis and storytelling.”
