In this week’s list of unmissable news brand content, readers gain insight into making leather from salmon skins, a successful road to recovery and a shared love story…
1. Fin-tastic fashion
The skin of smoked salmon is usually disposed of or used in fertiliser and biofuel. In recent years, the fashion industry has followed in the footsteps of the Hezhen and Nivkh Indigenous groups in China and Siberia, starting to make leather from salmon skins.
Designer Isabelle Taylor started making salmon leather when she was at university and lived above a fishmonger. After studied fashion and being on the hunt of a sustainable solution, she began experimenting with the discarded salmon skins.
She explains to the Guardian that the use of “byproducts as a sustainable solution” can be controversial because it could increase the demand for the fish. Taylor explains in her case: “If the fishing industry stopped disposing of their skins, I wouldn’t go fishing for more skins. I’d find a different industry where other resources are getting wasted.”

4. Stride to recovery
Being off with an ACL injury allowed Birmingham City defender Siobhan “Shiv” Wilson to build a career off the pitch, but she is edging closer to returning to what she does best. Wilson, whose workout videos have attracted one million followers on TikTok, she turned to the social media platform while taking time off football in April 2022.
In the period she couldn’t play she turned to TikTok, creating workout videos which have attracted one million followers. Putting in the hard graft has been worth it for Wilson as she has recently signed a new contract with Women’s Championship club Birmingham.
“It’s weird, because if it was going to happen to anyone, the best person for it to happen to me, because I love being in the gym anyway,” the defender told The Telegraph of her knee injury. “I said to myself, ‘If you want to be in the gym so much, here you go, you’re going to have to be in there multiple times a week now’. I like to see the transformation so, when I look back now and think that I couldn’t even squat, I couldn’t even walk, compared to where I am now, ‘I’ve done it’. I’m finally feeling like a footballer again.”

5. Battle of mental health
There has been a rise in conversation about the decline of mental health of people, with The Times informing readers of a new study showing just how bad the situation has become for young people and how it could be affecting their ability to work. Those in Gen Z are being signed off with a mental health disorder more often than adults in their 40s.
The report from the Resolution Foundation think tank found that at least 5% of 20 to 24-year-olds were economically inactive because of ill health. Astonishingly, 34% of young people aged 18 to 24 reported symptoms of mental disorder, such as depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder.
In recent years there has been a noticeable rise not just in the number of people seeking their help but in the seriousness of the issues they are dealing with. This has been worsened by the pandemic, with young people taking disorders experienced as teenagers into adult life, where they are often incompatible with the workplace.
