Appeals from across the news industry aim to provide immediate aid to stricken regions as the death toll continues to climb
The Sun started its appeal on Tuesday, raising over £1 million in under a week. Alongside readers’ donations, companies such as Iceland, Sainsbury’s and Barratt Homes have provided generous support to the campaign.
Prime minister Rishi Sunak praised the campaign at the weekend, saying: “Sun readers have responded to this tragedy by doing what the British people do best – they have reached out to help those in need.
“The Sun’s campaign has raised an incredible £1 million for the Red Cross’ lifesaving work on the ground, which will make a huge difference to people who have lost everything in the disaster.”
On Friday, The Independent and Metro launched front page campaigns to raise funds for the Disasters Emergency Committee’s earthquake response. The committee, which also includes the British Red Cross, is a coalition of 14 UK aid organisations helping with search efforts and providing vital medical assistance.
