It’s been another busy year for us at Newsworks, and it’s been fantastic to have the opportunity to see and speak to so many across the industry as we talk all things news brands. In case you missed it, here’s just some of our 2023 highlights
Interviews, deep dives and stand out ads
Future of News — Series 2
What does the next generation of news look like? In our monthly series, Newsworks spoke to another group of the industry’s rising stars about what inspired them to be journalists, some of their proudest moments so far and their perspectives on the newsrooms of the future.
Keep your eyes peeled in 2024 as we continue to showcase inspiring members of the newest generation of journalists, giving insight into the importance of trusted journalism.
Deep Dives
We also continued our deep dives across the year, looking into how the news brands covered the big talking points of the year across their different platforms. We touched on World Mental Health Day in a special edition of ‘What we like’, which dove into how publishers and brands are opening the conversation with readers about mental health and how they can support themselves and others.
We also took a look into the biggest sports headlines, including the biggest Women’s football World Cup in the competition’s history in the summer. From on-pitch action to off-pitch support controversy, click here to how news brands followed the Lionesses’ pursuit of world glory.
10 minutes with some fascinating industry figures
In our continuing series, fascinating journalists and media professionals from across the UK sit down with Newsworks to discuss their route into the industry, what their day-to-day looks like in their role, as well as the most important question: who would make their fantasy dinner guest list? You can find a collection of all our ’10 minutes with’ interviews here.
Podcasts and Special editon ’10 mins with…’
We also launched a new section of our site in June, celebrating the length and breadth of the world of news brand podcasts — check out some recommendations, insights and exclusive interviews here.
Newsworks Ad of the Year 2023
For this year’s instalment of our annual Christmas competition, we took the best 12 campaigns from this year’s ad of the month polls, pitting four against each other over three days to see which three will battle to be crowned ad of the year.
OMD and Lidl won with their iconic QRoissant from March. More on our winners and the well-deserved runner-up campaigns can be seen here.
On the road
It’s been a great 2023 here on the site, but it’s been an even better one out on the road. Whether sharing our latest research or learning how to build a knock-out vintage wardrobe, here is just some of what we got up to…
Trust
We kicked off the year with our exciting Trust research. Working with Tapestry Research, Map The Territory and effectiveness guru Peter Field, our findings really got under the skin of what we mean by the term ‘trust’ and how a more multi-faceted measurement can help brands build stronger trust with consumers through effective media choices.
Take a look at our research and our trust calculator.
Could we lie to you?
Then, in April, we hopped up the M6 to Manchester to host ‘Could we like to you?’, a game show sorting fact from fake in a series of quick fire rounds. Agencies from across the city joined host Rob Mayhew and our panel of top journalists to muddle through the misinformation and see which panellist came out on top.
MAD//Fest
Across three action-packed days, Newsworks and some of the UK’s best-known culture journalists invited the advertising industry to a fiesta of fashion, food & drink and live music at our MAD//Fest 2023 Speakeasy.
Tuesday saw three agency fashionistas take to the runway in our pre-loved fashion show, while discussing the latest in sustainable trends was a line-up of expert journalists and stylists, including Love Island’s Tasha Ghouri. Food was a treat on Wednesday with a special lunchtime sampling experience from food creator Seema Pankhania and a host of food and drink connoisseurs from across the news brand industry. Finally, playing us out on Thursday, our host Pandora Forsyth was joined in conversation by one of the UK’s most hotly anticipated young musicians, Tom A. Smith, treating the Speakeasy to an exclusive lunchtime gig.

Newsworks Awards
Last but certainly not least, we ended the year on a massive high at our 2023 Newsworks Awards. Taking place at the spectacular 12th Knot rooftop bar in London’s Sea Containers hotel, we celebrated the very best advertising in trusted, multiplatform news brands, as well as recognised brilliant individuals and advertisers for their outstanding work.
