The 60 second ad pays tribute to journalists that have been killed while doing their jobs, including The Sunday Times’ Marie Colvin who died in Syria in 2012.
In addition to Colvin, the ad also features The Washington Post’s Jamal Khashoggi who was killed in Saudi Arabia last year and Austin Tice, a freelance reporter who has been missing in Syria for six years.
Footage from the Second World War, moon landing, civil rights marches and Oklahoma bombing is included in the ad, which ran during Sunday’s Super Bowl (3 February 2019).
The ad ends with the message: “Knowing empowers us. Knowing helps us decide. Knowing keeps us free. Democracy dies in darkness.”
