The publisher collaborated with 16 outlets worldwide on a report showing widespread surveillance by authoritarian governments.
The report shows that more than 50,000 phone numbers have allegedly been identified as those of people of interest by clients of an Israeli surveillance company.
The investigation has found authoritarian governments have targeted human rights activists, journalists and lawyers around the world using software made by the surveillance company NSO Group.
To compile the report, The Guardian collaborated with 16 other international media outlets, including the Washington Post and France’s Le Monde. The media outlets work in partnership with Forbidden Stories, a non-profit organisation based in Paris.
In Tuesday’s edition of the paper, the front page features a quote from an exclusive interview with whistleblower Edward Snowden. Speaking directly to the consortium’s findings, he said: “If you don’t stop this, it’s not going to be 50,000 targets. It’s going to be 50 million.”
