1. ‘The Hardest Geezer’s’ greatest achievement
Known as the “Hardest Geezer”, Russell Cook, a 27-year-old from Worthing in West Sussex, ran from one end of Africa to another. He crossed the finish line in Tunisia after 352 days. Cook admitted that the feat had been harder than he imagined but he hoped that it would encourage people to “get moving more”.
The British endurance athlete ran the equivalent of more than a marathon a day for nearly a year, travelling 16,000km of deserts, jungles and mountains across 16 countries. Project Africa has so far raised nearly £800,000 for the Running Charity, which uses running to help homeless people or those with complex needs, as well as Sandblast, a charity raising awareness of and empowering the Sahrawis, an ethnic group many of whom are refugees in Western Sahara.
