Last week‘s 13th annual British Journalism Awards, which celebrates the best of British journalism, was hosted by presenter Jeremy Vine at the London Hilton Bankside
The Sunday Times writer Caroline Wheeler received Journalist of the Year for the second year in a row, for her investigation on the infected blood scandal. Wheeler also won in the politics category.
The Times and Sunday Times were recognised in three more categories: Rosamund Urwin and Charlotte Wace were awarded for their investigation into allegations against Russell Brand, and Oliver Marsden won New Journalist of the Year for his work in Israel and Lebanon.
Meanwhile, The Sun’s Scarlet Howes, Mike Hamilton, Alex West, Victoria Newton and James Slack, received Investigation of the Year and Scoop of the Year for the Huw Edwards scandal.
Telegraph journalist David Knowles was remembered with recognition of his work providing “a voice for those who need it most”. Knowles, who launched The Telegraph’s daily podcast, was awarded the Public Service Journalism prize three months after his sudden death aged 32.
The Guardian’s business reporter Rob Davies and football correspondent Jacob Steinberg, in collaboration with The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, took home the Sports Journalism Award for investigating the financial affairs of the former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.
Elsewhere, Guardian journalist Sirin Kale received the Features Journalism Award for her work, including a report from a maternity unit in Winchester and the life and death of John Balson.
Daily Mirror journalists Tom Pettifor, Matthew Young and Daniel Dove were awarded in the Online Video Journalism category for a report into new evidence on Jill Dando, one of the UK’s most high-profile unsolved murders.
MailOnline’s Deep Dive series team: Harry Lewis-Irlam, Stephen Matthews, Darren Boyle and Rhodri Morgan received Innovation of the Year for their investigations, including one on how China could invade Taiwan and spark World War Three.
Meanwhile, The Independent journalist Rebecca Thomas won the award for Health & Life Sciences Journalism, in recognition of her NHS abuse scandal investigation into mental health patients who were assaulted.
The event supports the Journalists’ Charity, which assists members of the profession who fall on hard times.
