In December 2020, the i newspaper teamed up with Magic Breakfast for its 2020 Christmas appeal to help impoverished children have the right start to their day. Nine in every class of 30 children are living in poverty according to the Food Foundation, and 2.3m children are living in families that have experienced ‘food insecurity’.
Magic Breakfast works with more than 1,000 schools in the UK, providing breakfasts including bagels, porridge and fruit juice to children. All the food provided by Magic Breakfast is designed to be nutritious and filling to ensure children start their school day without being distracted by an empty stomach.
With just 34p needed for the charity to fund one breakfast, the i’s managed to raise an amazing £340,000 from the all the generous reader donations. This figure beat a succession of fundraising targets and the money raised provided over a million breakfasts for hungry schoolchildren.
These are just a few of thank you messages from grateful children:
“Magic Breakfast is an excellent idea because it gives children an opportunity to have food if they can’t afford it at home. It gives me a great start to my day, as breakfast gives me energy”
Sophie
“I have lots of siblings so it is very hard for my mother and father to afford breakfast for us. Thank you”
Dilem
“I like the taste of cereal in the morning and it gives me a lovely feeling of happiness”
