1. Hollywood 2024 predictions
The Guardian shared a video to their Instagram platform of Charles Bramesco, a film critic and writer.
Bramesco takes a look at old Hollywood movies set in the year 2024, sharing what he believes we can learn about the year from fictional versions. Many filmmakers intended their work as a warning before all hope for civilization was lost, questioning whether humanity does stand a chance.
Bramesco examines worst-case scenarios from films such as 1975’s ‘A Boy and His Dog’, in which the earth becomes barren after years of nuclear testing and global warming, as well as 1960’s film ‘Beyond the Time Barrier’, a sci-fi film exploring the time space continuum and nuclear weapons testing, a subject of great concern in the 50’s and 60’s and still relevant in the present day.
2. Honourable best dressed list
The 81st Golden Globe Awards honoured the best in film and American television productions of 2023. The evening saw Barbie taking home best cinematic achievement and Oppenheimer best drama, while Yorgos Lanthimos’s absurdist film Poor Things won for best comedy at the first major awards show of the year.
The Times shared on TikTok their top picks for best dressed on the red carpet — from Margot Robbie’s fuchsia sequin gown, which was a lifestyle remake of the 1977’s Superstar model of Barbie, to memorable statement pieces such as actress Hunter Schafer’s custom Prada translucent dress.
3. ‘Rat snacking’
‘Girl dinner’ was the biggest TikTok food trend last year — an easy meal you turn to after a tiring day and without putting much thought into it. On X, The Independent reported that the latest trend to appear on TikTok is ‘rat snacking’. This refers to small guilty pleasure snacks which can sometimes include some unusual and unique combinations. For example,
A trending snack in 2023 which could fall into the rat snack category is the pickle cheese wrap which is a pickle wrapped in fried cheese
Meanwhile, TikToker Abbey Sharp gave insight into why we’re seeing more people post about their rat snacks – and she thinks the reasons are to do with finances and relatability. “[With] the rise in grocery costs, people are trying to find any way that they can save money and for a lot of people, this means digging deep into the pantry, freezer, or fridge to pull together any little bits and pieces that may not traditionally go together,”
4. Costumes Featurette
The Sun Showbiz’s YouTube channels gives readers an insight into Holly Waddington’s award-nominated costume designs for the new film ‘Poor things’ now playing in cinemas.
The tale shows the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter.
Yorgos Lanthimos director and producer said: “This was not going to be a very traditional period film, so we could work with layers of garments which we would never really see in films.”
Take a look at the tailor made garments for the film, for which Waddington experimented with shapes and challenged herself to execute new and inspired costumes.
5. ‘Dirty wellness’
This week, The Telegraph dove deep into the biggest health trend for 2024, the year of ‘dirty wellness’. Gabriela Peacock, nutritionist for Prince Harry, as well as Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie explains the term, saying , this means enough naughtiness to enjoy yourself, but with the tools to know how to offset the fun with good behaviour. Her tips include: ‘If you secretly want that fast food, have it – just focus on protein. Have a KFC, which isn’t great but is at least largely protein and there’s nothing objectively wrong with an Indian takeaway. Many dishes are actually great high-protein food choices.’
“Dirty wellness” is a movement that began in LA and went viral on TikTok in 2023. It’s a move away from restrictive eating and guilt-filled minds and focusses on actively seeking out time for joy every day, setting aside time to strive to look after yourself better and adding some naughty to your nice food treats.
