Readers are recycling single-use masks to protect our ecosystem from damage extending well beyond our lifetimes
‘Mask force’ was launched in June in partnership with the supermarket chain Morrisons, in whose specially marked bins people can deposit their single-use masks in 488 stores across Great Britain.
Once full, each bin is collected by the ReWorked organisation and the contents are transformed into building materials, PPE or outdoor furniture.
Brilliantly, it has only taken less than two months for Morrisons shoppers to break the barrier of one million face coverings recycled.
The Sun’s campaign came after experts warned Britain could suffer a generation of environmental damage with 100 million disposable masks being thrown away each week.
Stars such as surfer and ex-Love Island star Lucie Donlan and TV presenter Gaby Roslin have urged readers to continue recycling their masks, while the environmental protection organisation Greenpeace has also backed the initiative.
