The publication’s magazine The Guardian Weekly is to be packaged in a compostable wrap as part of the newsbrand’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
The recently relaunched international news magazine will have its next issue (dated 7th June) shipped out to subscribers in The Guardian’s compostable wrap as a replacement to the current polythene wrapping.
Over the coming months, the wrap will then extend to The Guardian Weekly subscribers in Europe and the rest of the world. The current international rollout excludes Australia and New Zealand, where options are still being explored. Currently, copies of The Guardian Weekly in the US and Canada arrive in the post unwrapped.
Mylene Sylvestre, director of publishing, Guardian News & Media said: “It was wonderful to see such a positive response from readers after the introduction of compostable wrapping for our Saturday paper and I am proud that we can now look to extend this to The Guardian Weekly subscribers in the UK and beyond. We are continuing to put considerable effort into making our print products as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible.”
The news comes after a move earlier this year to package Saturday supplements in a compostable wrap in an effort to help reduce plastic waste. The wrap, which is made from a material derived from potato starch, is designed to allow readers to dispose of it ethically.
