Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was detained by Russia during a reporting trip and falsely accused of espionage. The American news brand (owned by News UK’s parent company) and the U.S. government vehemently deny the allegation and have called for his immediate release
His unjust arrest is a brazen violation of press freedom and not only poses far-reaching consequences to journalism and the media, but to governments and democracies everywhere. We all have a stake in this. After all, a free press is pivotal to maintaining a free society.
The Wall Street Journal and the broader Dow Jones community invites everyone to help amplify Evan’s story in a social media storm with the hashtag #IStandWithEvan on Friday 7 July at 3.30pm, 100 days after Gershkovich’s arrest.
