Voters went hopping mad for all eight of the shortlisted campaigns, but the Journalists’ Charity’s striking campaign about the importance of war journalism and remembering those who produce it has been voted March’s ad of the month
With the conflict in Ukraine dominating the news agenda since its outbreak at the end of February, millions have been turning to trusted journalism to understand the harrowing stories coming from the war-affected country and beyond. However, this ad campaign from the Journalists’ Charity focusses on those behind the microphones, mobile phones and cameras risking their lives to ensure the truth of the war and its suffering is heard.
Stating that war without journalism is “unthinkable”, this was the third in the charity’s campaign on the importance of journalism in troubling times, following on from ads around lockdown and living with the pandemic.
Commenting on the campaign, the Journalists’ Charity chief executive James Brindle said: “I’m really grateful to Newsworks for highlighting this campaign because the message behind it is hugely important – journalists are putting their lives on the line to ensure we get the truth about the war in Ukraine.
“The fact that Russian citizens have lost what was left of their free press brings the power and importance of British journalism into even sharper focus.
“I’m so grateful that national publishers have once again given their backing to this initiative, carrying it across every title. It helps to reinforce the value of war reporting, and sends a message to journalists and their crews that we place an enormous value on their contribution.
“Of course I hope that every journalist will return from Ukraine safe and well, but the reality is that many will bear the physical and emotional scars of conflict. Here the charity stands ready to offer its assistance now and in the future.”
