Speaking to The Sun, Beckham urged everyone to buy a poppy on the last day before lockdown saying: “We owe that generation everything.”
The football star backed The Sun’s campaign to save the Poppy Appeal by delivering poppies to the iconic Chelsea Pensioners.
The Pensioners – who normally raise tens of thousands of pounds – have been banned from selling poppies on the streets because of have been banned from selling poppies on the streets because of Covid 19.
Beckham said: “With another lockdown coming it is more important than ever that we support our veterans. A lot of them may be isolated or worried about the pandemic. That is why I am so glad to be able to support this campaign. That’s the reason I am here. This is a great campaign.”
Sun’s editor, Victoria Newton, said: “For almost 100 years, through thick and thin, the Legion has been there to help military families thanks to the public’s generosity.
“But this year, because Covid has prevented vulnerable sellers taking part, the poppy appeal is in trouble.
“Which is why The Sun, backed by David Beckham – along with Captain Tom, Anthony Joshua and The Prime Minister – is urging people to ride to the rescue of the Legion and the veterans and their families who rely on it.”
