Journalists from Daily Express, The Independent, Daily Mail, The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, Daily Mirror, The Sunday Times, Metro, Evening Standard, The Sun and The Yorkshire Post joined forces yesterday to discuss the power of campaigning journalism at Mindshare’s annual Huddle.
Throughout the morning, and across the three separate panels, the 11 leading journalists discussed a range of topics around the central theme ‘Empowering the People’.
They all talked passionately about the individual campaigns they had been involved in and how news brands influence and propel change in society.
The panels – all chaired by The Drum’s associate editor Sonoo Singh – covered: Time for Change (holding the powerful to account); Health Matters (tackling health issues and providing a voice to the voiceless); and These Kids Can (fighting for our children to live in a kinder, fairer world).
Sonoo said: “Campaigning journalism is at the heart of what news brands are all about. “What struck me this morning was not just the passion and tenacity of the individual journalists but also their empathy with their readers and those that they were campaigning for.
“And a common thread that emerged was that brands absolutely have a part to play if authenticity, trust and editorial independence are upheld. For any advertiser this has to be a no brainer as supporting causes that make changes for the good of society can only be a positive thing.”
