With five million caught up in the chaos of devastated towns and cities, the Ukraine Fund will help both those trapped and others fleeing the conflict
Working with the International Red Cross and its local subsidiaries, readers’ donations will go to providing women, children, the old and infirm access to shelter, food, water and medical supplies.
Assistance will be given both by the Ukrainian Red Cross teams helping those still trapped in conflict zones as well as Red Cross teams from surrounding countries helping refugees escaping danger.
Mike Adamson, chief executive of British Red Cross, said: “Your donations will help us reach people with food, water, medicine, medical equipment and other essentials. We thank Sun readers for your kind support.”
Leading politicians are also urging readers to donate to the fund, including prime minister Boris Johnson and every living former prime minister. Johnson said: “I pay tribute to the over-whelming response from Sun readers to help the people of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, footballer and campaigner Gary Lineker penned a column encouraging readers to give money to The Sun: “If you are in a position where you can help, please do anything you can. Even the smallest of donations can help.
“Any support that Sun readers can give will be massively appreciated and hugely important.”
