The Sun on Sunday pushes for the relocation of a boy living with a brain tumour in rat-infested social housing.
On World Press Freedom Day back in May, Newsworks took a look at examples of how news brands invest resources into investigations that – as Geordie Greig put it at Newsworks’ Shift North event – “hold power to account…shine a light in dark places, question, uncover and reveal.”
This recent example from The Sun on Sunday shows how a news brand campaign helped shed light on a housing case involving three-year-old Oliver Collins and his mum, Georgina.
Collins has a weakened immune system following the chemotherapy he received for a brain tumour and his mum feared that the rat infestation could kill him.
The successful campaign resulted in the pair being offered a two-bedroom flat near Richmond Park.
Housing Minister Esther McVey spoke out about the issue. She said: “I am delighted that Georgina and her son have a new safe place to call home.
“However, no family should ever have to endure what they did. I hope councils across the country will take the steps needed to ensure no family goes through this again.
“As Housing Minister I am committed to making sure that whether you live in social or private housing you are in a home which is decent, safe and secure”.
