Nicolas Cecil takes over as political editor as his long-serving predecessor Joe Murphy retires.
Cecil, who has been deputy political editor for the publisher since 2015, will be taking over the role from 19 July. Outgoing editor Murphy, who has been in post for 17 years, will be leaving the team to pursue a “gap decade”.
Alongside Cecil’s appointment, two more team announcements have been made regarding the politics desk. David Bond will be joining as deputy political editor, moving from the Financial Times where he is currently Brexit editor. Bond has previously worked on the Evening Standard’s sports coverage.
They will also be joined by Sophia Sleigh, who has been promoted to political correspondent.
Remarking on her new look political team, the Evening Standard’s editor Emily Sheffield said: “We are incredibly excited to bring together such an outstanding group of journalists to form our new political team, promoting Nicholas and Sophia and welcoming back David.
“At such an important time for London and the UK, the team, led by Nicholas, will use their immense experience, tenacity and deep connections in Westminster to deliver the most important political headlines and analysis to millions of Londoners and Evening Standard readers globally.
“We also extend our thanks to Joe Murphy for his incredible service to the Evening Standard over the past 20 years and the outstanding journalism he has delivered to our readers. We wish him all the best”
