In an open letter against misogynistic hate speech signed by high-profile figures across men’s and women’s football and beyond, the full-page campaign calls on the government to honour its pledge to make the UK “the safest place in the world to be online”
The campaign is the latest in the mobile phone network’s campaign ‘Hope United’, which uses British sport to bring awareness to online hate and fights to make social media companies more accountable for the abuse hosted on their platforms.
The open letter is notable for its list of signatories, which includes top past and present England players Lucy Bronze, Demi Stokes and Rachel Brown-Finnis, influential figures in men’s football like England national manager Gareth Southgate, Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk and Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford, as well as high-profile broadcasters Gabby Logan, Clare Balding and Jake Humphrey.
