Employees showed their support for the ‘Great British Spring Clean’ on Wednesday (10 April) by going out to litter pick in Old Deer Park, Richmond, Surrey.
The event, which was coordinated locally with South West London Environment Network, is part of the Daily Mail’s partnership with the environmental charity, Keep Britain Tidy.
The ‘Great British Spring Clean’ has been running since 22 March and finishes on 23 April. Currently in its fourth year, the Daily Mail officially backed the campaign in January, helping drive participation numbers past the goal of 500,000 sign ups with two weeks left to go.
Daily Mail editor, Geordie Greig, who led the community clean up on Wednesday, said: “The Mail has spent the past decade campaigning to reduce waste, help the environment and protect our oceans in campaigns which have received widespread support. The ‘Great British Spring Clean’ is a simple thing to call for but a complicated thing to make happen in an effective way. We’re calling on people to continue to join this campaign and surpass anything we’ve done before.”
Keep Britain Tidy chief executive Allison Ogden-Newton added: “When we launched the ‘Great British Spring Clean’ we aimed to create the country’s biggest-ever mass action environmental campaign and, with the help of the Daily Mail, we have done it. Our #LitterHeroes have collected more than 900,000 bags of rubbish so far, with nearly two weeks still to go, and given more than one million hours of time to the campaign and we would like to thank each and every one of them.”
Those supporting and recognising the Mail’s efforts include Theresa May, Sir David Attenborough and the United Nations. The ‘Great British Spring Clean’ is an example of how the Daily Mail and its readers can make a difference to life in Britain every day.
