The news brand successfully campaigned for full death-in-duty benefits for families of NHS and care workers who have died on the frontline against coronavirus.
In an emotional tribute to those who have lost their lives working for the NHS or in care homes, the Daily Express wanted to give back and help support the families who have lost loved ones.
As a result, Matt Hancock has now unveiled a new £60,000 life assurance scheme for all, regardless of whether those who died had an NHS Pension.
The announcement came ahead of the nation falling silent at 11am today (28 April) to remember the “fallen heroes” who have lost their lives.
In an article in the newspaper today, it read: “The announcement by the Health Secretary was a significant victory in the Daily Express crusade for a Coronavirus Compensation Scheme for NHS and care workers.”
Dr Lisa Cameron, SNP MP for East Kilbride said: “I am so relieved this campaign has been successful. I would like to thank the Daily Express for highlighting the plight of frontline staff and the grieving families left behind.”
Figures from the Daily Express revealed that 135 health and care workers have unfortunately died from the coronavirus. Our hearts go out to their families at this difficult time.
