The news brand calls on readers to help save the British high street.
In just seven days, thousands of independent and chain stores will begin to open their doors after weeks of being closed.
The lockdown has cost the retail sector £1.8billion per week in lost sales.
To support British businesses and help save our high streets, the Daily Mirror has started a ‘Shop for Britain’ campaign.
According to a Daily Mirror poll, 87% of 55-64 years olds believe the high street is important to the wider community in their area with 83% agreeing across all age groups
Daily Mirror’s head of business graham Hiscott said: “With many stores now at risk of collapse, the Mirror is launching a Shop for Britain campaign – to give our high streets a vital boost at this critical time.
“By supporting our shops, big and small, readers are also helping ensure that their wider community recovers. And buying British-made products, when possible, will inject cash into the country’s battered economy.
“The retail sector employs three million people and contributes £17billion a year in business taxes”.
Endorsing the Daily Mirror ‘Shop for Britain’ campaign are a range of business leaders including James Timpson, chief executive of key cutter and shoe mender chain Timpson who added: “I support the Daily Mirror’s ‘Shop for Britain’ campaign because I believe that our high streets are a vital part of our culture, our economy, and most importantly our way of life in the months and years ahead as we recover from the Covid-19 crisis.”
In today’s edition of the paper, a two-page spread announcing the campaign features interviews with Co-op Group’s chief executive Steve Murrells and Helen Dickinson, chief executive of British Retail Consortium.
