The London Press Club Awards ceremony held at Stationers’ Hall celebrated with 150 of some of Britain’s top journalists
The Awards commemorated journalists across the globe reporting from conflict zones with a moment of silence for the things “we take for granted”.
Awards were presented for several categories. Newspaper of the Year was presented to The Sun alongside the Scoop of the Year for its 18-month investigation into the BBC presenter, Huw Edwards.
Accepting the award, Sun editor Victoria Newton said: “Freedom of speech is something that I hope we all continue to fight for in this room and most importantly I want to say an incredible thank you to my brilliant Sun team, I couldn’t have done any of it without them, they are magnificent.”
Meanwhile, Political Journalist of the Year for Tim Shipman of The Times and The Sunday Times. The judges stated Shipman’s columns are “an essential read for those who want to know what is going on behind the scenes in politics”.
Courts correspondent for the Standard Tristan Kirk was awarded Journalist of the Year for his investigation into a secretive court process named “conveyor belt justice” and his work highlighting the single justice procedure system, seeing vulnerable people dealt with by the courts without proper inspection.
Writing in yesterday’s London Standard, editor Dylan Jones said: “Also, I’d like to personally congratulate the Standard’s Courts Correspondent Tristan Kirk for winning journalist of the year at the London Press Club Awards for his work exposing the Single Justice Procedure, resulting in thousands of unjust convictions being overturned.”
He added: “His work makes us all proud.”
Other award receivers included the Daily Telegraph’s Oliver Brown, who accepted the award for Sport Journalist of the Year. Young Journalist of the Year was presented to Eirian Prosser from MailOnline.
Elsewhere, the prestigious Edgar Wallace Award for excellence in writing was given posthumously to the Independent reporter Kim Sangupta, who covered the biggest conflicts of his generation during his career and died earlier this year.
