1. Hamilton wins British GP for ninth time
Lewis Hamilton won a race-long fight with fellow competitors Max Verstappen and Lando Norris at a transfixing British Grand Prix to take his first victory since December 2021, Guardian sport reports on X.
Hamilton, heading to Ferrari next year, took the flag at Silverstone in tricky wet and dry conditions on Sunday. His car is now increasingly close to the frontrunners, Red Bull and McLaren, after two years of struggling for performance. CEO of Mercedes F1 Team Toto Wolff has described Hamilton’s victory as a fairytale, while the seven-time world champion is now optimistic he can take more victories this season and end his time with Mercedes on a high.
2. Recovery day for the Three Lions
Ever wondered what a rest day looks like for the Three Lions? The Independent shares a TikTok of how the England football team are preparing for the Euro 2024 semi-final.
Push ups, cardio cycling and a dip in the pool is considered a recovery day after a tense match against Switzerland, which England won in a penalty shoot-out. Gruelling training now continues as the men prepare to take on the Netherlands on Wednesday.
3. ‘A real-life supergran’
Mary Lamb has become the UK’s first female wheelchair user to reach the top of the Three Peaks. Lamb, aged 65, was reportedly left ‘battered and bruised’ after pushing her body to the max during the gruelling three-day challenge.
The grandmother of nine has been in a wheelchair since 2007 after she was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition. Lamb suffered a chest infection, a stomach bug and was just ‘10 minutes away from hypothermia’ during one perilous climb. However, she successfully reached the summit of all three mountains — Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon — with the help of the British Army and her assistance dog Sheldon.
Now Lamb has been nominated for a Pride of Britain award thanks to her incredible efforts to raise money for charity.
4. Team USA’s secret weapon
With the US Olympic trials now over, Team USA’s gymnastics schedule for the upcoming Paris Games has been finalised. One team member who was always going to make the plane was a golden retriever support dog known as Beacon. Beacon, holder of title ‘goodest boy’, was a breakout star during last week’s trials in Minneapolis.
